Walk-In Shower Conversions in Tarrant County: What It Really Involves
Tub out, walk-in in — what actually happens behind the tile, and the two questions to settle before anyone swings a hammer.
The tub-to-walk-in-shower conversion is the single most requested bathroom change we build in Tarrant County. It looks simple from the outside — tub out, shower in — but the quality of the finished shower is decided by what happens behind the tile. Here’s the honest walkthrough.
The two questions to settle first
1. Curb or curbless? A curbless (zero-entry) shower looks incredible and is easier to step into — but it demands more from the floor: the slope has to be built into the subfloor, not faked with a curb. Great when planned properly; a leak risk when rushed.
2. Where does the water go? Moving a drain from tub position to a center or linear drain is normal in a conversion — it’s also plumbing work under your slab or floor, and it should be priced clearly up front, not discovered on an invoice.
What happens behind the tile (in order)
- Demo and inspection: the tub comes out and we finally see the framing, subfloor, and plumbing. Older homes usually have a surprise or two — better found now.
- Plumbing rough-in: the drain and valve move to their new positions.
- The pan and waterproofing: the part nobody photographs and everybody depends on. Membrane, corners, seams, flood test. This is the step that decides whether your shower is still perfect in year ten.
- Tile, glass, and trim: the visible 20% that gets all the credit.
What it costs
A conversion is usually part of a broader bathroom update — and most full bathroom remodels we build land between $25,000 and $45,000, with the shower itself as the biggest single line. The honest range for YOUR bathroom depends on drain moves, tile selection, and glass — which is exactly what a written scope pins down.
